Alcon PanOptix Pro in Brisbane: A Patient Guide
For years, in most of the world, saying “trifocal” practically meant PanOptix. It’s the most implanted trifocal lens there is. The Clareon PanOptix Pro is Alcon’s next-generation version, and if you’re the kind of patient who does the research before choosing a lens for cataract surgery or lens exchange, it’s worth separating what’s genuinely proven about it from what’s still promise. That’s what this guide does.
What it is
The PanOptix Pro is a diffractive trifocal on Alcon’s modern Clareon acrylic platform, delivered through an automated pre-loaded injector, with a toric version for astigmatism. Like the original, the central 4.5 mm of the optic splits light to three focal points: distance, intermediate at about 60 cm (computer, dashboard, cooking) and near at about 40 cm (reading). The Clareon material is a quiet strength of the whole package. Studies rank it among the lowest of any acrylic for glistenings and surface haze, and a one-year multicentre study found no glistening formation at all.
What’s actually new
Every diffractive lens wastes some light as scatter. That lost light goes to no useful focal point, and it’s part of what creates halos and washes out contrast. The Pro’s redesigned optical profile, which Alcon calls ENLIGHTEN NXT, reclaims roughly half of it. By Alcon’s bench data, usable light rises from 88% to 94%, scatter halves from 12% to 6%, and image contrast improves measurably. Keep in mind those figures come from the manufacturer’s laboratory, not from independent clinical outcomes.
The clinical evidence so far comes mainly from Alcon’s paired-eye trials, with the Pro in one eye and the original PanOptix in the other. That’s actually a rigorous way to compare lenses, since each patient is their own control. As summarised by Review of Ophthalmology, vision was equivalent at all three distances, and patients preferred the Pro eye roughly two to one, including for reduced halos and starbursts. Full peer-reviewed publication is still pending. So the fair summary in 2026 is: the same proven trifocal vision, credible early evidence of cleaner night-time optics, and the definitive published data still to come.
Let’s talk about halos
This is the part the brochures soften, so I won’t. A trifocal splits light with diffractive rings, and no refinement changes that physics. Alcon’s own professional labelling describes the Pro’s halo profile as similar to the original PanOptix. From the original lens’s trial data, that means roughly 44% of patients notice halos around lights at night, but fewer than 5% rate them severe, most adapt over months, and in the original US pivotal trial over 99% of patients said they would choose the same lens again. The Pro looks like it shifts that experience meaningfully in the right direction. It doesn’t delete it.
That’s the deal the whole trifocal category offers: near-complete freedom from glasses at every distance, paid for with some night-time light effects and a small contrast cost. For most motivated patients it’s a good deal. If you drive professionally at night, or you know you’re the type to fixate on any imperfection, a ring-free design like the TECNIS PureSee or a monofocal-plus like the enVista Aspire is often the wiser conversation.
Who it suits: a corneal surgeon’s view
Trifocals are wonderful in the right eyes and unforgiving in the wrong ones. The right candidate has a healthy macula, a regular cornea, a well-controlled ocular surface and realistic expectations. The wrong candidate has keratoconus, corneal scarring, irregular astigmatism, significant dry eye or macular disease. Eyes that have had LASIK need particularly careful assessment, both for lens-power accuracy and optical quality.
